An established and internationally published freelance writer is seeking a focused, motivated, and passionate intern. The student should be currently enrolled at a college in the Los Angeles area and be interested in writing for magazines and newspapers or have an interest in pursuing a career in publishing. S/he should be keen to further develop their skills as the intern will come away with invaluable experience in the field of journalism, as well as knowledge of how to run your own business. The intern will assist with research, help promote and market services, draft story pitches, pitch editors, and locate sources; in other words, the intern will have real responsibility.
<>

<>
Additional responsibilities will include communicating with clients, following-up on payments due, editing stories, and other office tasks that encompass running a business. The intern will be exposed to all facets of a writing business. There will also be opportunity to have a nationally published magazine story to add to your portfolio by internship end.

Editorial Internship/Mentorship (Franklin Hills)

<>
Editorial internship available with author and professional masthead writer for a variety of top national magazines and newspapers. Seeking mature and focused recent graduate with excellent writing skills as well as passion for working as a freelance writer and journalist, specifically. Candidate will devote part of his or her week to assisting with research, office tasks, contacts, transcription, copy-editing, and other matters that pertain to running a successful freelance writing business. But this is part-mentorship and part-assistantship. I’ll work with you on developing your portfolio, learning how to pitch editors, run your own business, and write in different forms and tones, as well as hone research, editing, revising, interviewing, and reporting skills. Basically a merger of journalism school and the vital skills you can’t learn there. Be familiar with and passionate about at least a few of the following topics: pop culture (from film to music), high culture (books and the arts), travel, technology, food, health, design. Be culturally omnivorous as well as Web-savvy and a passionate reader of various publications for which you would like to write. Please apply with a ief cover letter (detailing your subject and publication interests), resume, and writing samples (preferably published, even from college papers or blogs). Applicants comfortable with writing for publication will be considered first, and please only apply if you have a few hours a week to meet in person as well as very frequent availability via e-mail and phone. Much of the work (your writing as well as our assignments) can be done from home, but it’s important, as with a private music teacher, for us to meet at least once a week. It is, sadly, impossible to apply with a full-time job. So, if you have a low-maintenance form of work or a small cushion during these tough times, you’re ideal. Please also don’t apply if you’re currently interning somewhere else or working extra hard to finish a degree. Previous interns have earned editing jobs as well as articles at national publications. Job to start second week of January in LA; other perks beyond mentorship and introductions to editors include screenings, promo media, and other events.
